Weather Index Insurance
Protect your crops from weather-related losses with insurance

Weather Index Insurance
Drought Index Insurance is an innovative crop insurance product under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS). It protects farmers from the financial impact of drought and excessive rainfall using real-time satellite monitoring and historical climate data.
Key Benefits
- Government-Subsidized Premiums
- Pay as low as 2.75% of the insured crop value (the Government pays 50%)
- In disaster-prone areas, pay only 20% while the Government covers 80% of the premium
- Automatic Payouts Based on Satellite Data
- No need to file a claim — payouts are triggered when weather conditions in your area fall outside the optimal range for crop growth
- All insured farmers in the sub-county receive the same payout based on area-wide weather data
- Covers a Wide Range of Crops
- Including maize, beans, coffee, cotton, tea, rice, bananas, Irish potatoes, oilseeds, horticulture, vegetables, and more
How It Works
- 1. Your farm is monitored throughout the growing season by remote sensing technology using satellite data
- 2. If drought or excessive rainfall occurs, the loss is calculated based on sub-county-wide weather deviation
- 3. Payouts are made automatically at the end of the season based on the average loss level in your area
What You Can Insure
- Input costs (seeds, fertilizers, labor)
- Expected crop yield (acreage × average output × market price)
Farmer Categories
- Small-Scale Farmers: Under 5 acres or seasonal income below UGX 20M
- Large-Scale Farmers: 5 acres and above or income above UGX 20M
