Multi-Peril Crop Insurance
Multi-Peril Crop Insurance is offered under the Uganda Agriculture Insurance Scheme (UAIS) to shield farmers from financial losses caused by weather extremes, pests, and uncontrollable plant diseases. It’s designed for large-scale farmers and is backed by a government premium subsidy.
What It Covers
This insurance protects against major risks including:
- Drought
- Excessive Rainfall
- Flooding
- Windstorms
- Fire & Lightning
- Hailstorms & Landslides
- Uncontrollable Pests & Diseases
What’s Not Covered
- Harvested crops or crops in storage
- Losses from controllable pests, diseases, or weeds
- Damage caused during transportation
- Poor farming or harvesting practices
- Crops harvested before inspection
What You Can Insure
- Input Costs (e.g., seeds, fertilizer, labor)
- Expected Crop Yield (based on acreage, average output, and market value)
- Loan Amounts used for crop production
Premium & Subsidy
- Standard Premium: 4–6% of the insured value (varies by crop and region)
- High-Risk Area Premium: 10%
- Government Subsidy:
- 30% for large-scale farmers in low-risk areas
- 80% for large-scale farmers in high-risk areas
Eligible Crops
- Coffee, Cotton, Tea, Maize, Beans, Millet, Rice, Bananas, Barley, Irish Potatoes, Cassava, Oil Seeds, Fruit Trees, Vegetables, Cocoa.
Claims Process
- Notify the insurer immediately after crop damage
- Leave 2 rows unharvested across each field for assessment
- Wait for an assessor to inspect the crop before harvesting
- Claims are settled within 6 weeks
Who Can Enroll
- This product is designed for large-scale farmers:
- Farms 5 acres or more, or
- Earning over UGX 20 million per season
